The jewel-reliquary of Ivan Mazepa

Клейнод Івана МазепиOn August 16, 2021, the exhibition "Rarities of the Ukrainian Cossack State - Hetmanate" opened in St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv. Among the rarities of the Ukrainian Cossack state was a jewel (medallion-reliquary with a chain) by Ivan Mazepa (Kleinod - treasure, jewel) - a sign of dignity of the head of the Ukrainian state. This is one of the few attributes of the President of the Ukrainian People's Republic, which after the declaration of independence was handed over to President-elect Leonid Kravchuk and the government of independent Ukraine on August 24, 1992 and has survived as a symbol of hereditary state-building aspirations.

Клейнод Івана МазепиSpecialists of the Uvecon group of companies evaluated this jelly beetle at the request of the State Administration. The total value was defined as the sum of the values of its components - the medallion-reliquary and a chain of 20 plates. During the works, the object was photographed and the characteristics of the object were established and the documents submitted for evaluation were determined. In determining the value, the conclusions of the art examination performed by the staff of the National Museum of History of Ukraine and the Institute of History of Ukraine of NASU were taken into account. Svitlana Mykhailivna Smolnikova, Honored Appraiser of the Ukrainian Society of Appraisers, Head of the Department for the Assessment of Cultural Heritage Objects of the Group of Companies, headed the appraisal work.

Клейнод Івана МазепиThe jewel of Hetman Ivan Mazepa is one of the outstanding jewels of the national heritage of the time of the Hetmanate. The reliquary medallion is attached to a chain consisting of 20 oval medallion plates made of 800-grade silver. Of these, 19 are openwork medallions connected by rings with slit images, 10 medallions have a gilded trident in a silver frame, and 9 - crossed silver swords in a gilded shell. The 20th central medallion, to which the reliquary is actually attached, depicts gilded letters "ΣП" on a silver background framed by a gilded strip.

Клейнод Івана МазепиThe history of Ivan Mazepa's jewel-jewel is known only from the 1930s. In particular, in 1936, Professor of the University of Warsaw, Ambassador of the Ukrainian People's Republic (UPR) in Warsaw and Minister of Culture of the UPR government in exile Roman Stepanovych Smal-Stotsky (1859-1938) bought a medallion-reliquary (reliquary) from a famous collector. which belonged (according to legend) to Ivan Stepanovich Mazepa - Hetman of the Left Bank of Ukraine, Prince of the Holy Roman Empire, Knight of the highest award of the Russian Empire - the Order of Andrew the First Called and the Polish Order of the White Eagle. This reliquary was handed over by Roman Stepanovych Smal-Stotsky as a gift from the government of the Ukrainian People's Republic. With the help of the government and the donations of "Ukrainian citizenship in the native land and in the dispersion of being" Warsaw jewelers made a decoration for the handkerchief - a silver chain - a collar with 20 medallions. On the central medallion, to which the reliquary was attached, on the silver field two mysterious letters "ΣП" stood out in relief.

Клейнод Івана МазепиAfter the Second World War, the jewel was kept by Patriarch Mstislav in the city of Bavnd Brook (USA, New Jersey), and, according to the tradition of the past and just as the popes crowned kings, Patriarch Mstislav decorated the presidents of the Ukrainian People's Republic with it at the opening of each session of the Ukrainian National Council. So it was during the Extraordinary Session of the Ukrainian National Council of the 10th convocation on March 14, 1992, when for the last time the jewel of Ivan Mazepa was officially laid on the chest of the President of the Ukrainian People's Republic in exile Nikolai Plavyuk by Patriarch Mstislav. The session made a historic decision to transfer the powers of the State Center of the Ukrainian People's Republic in exile to the President of Ukraine Leonid Makarovich Kravchuk and to terminate the activities of the State Center of the UPR in exile.
